K2 Graduation 2008 @Singapore Polytechnic (25Oct2008)
Phew~
Our graduation was over finally. After so much effort, experiences and finally our Junior Edison are able to showcase their individual talents. For this grand event, it actually challenged my capability as a teacher to showcase the individual talents of the children under my care. Indeed after many trials and errors, I chose to do a short musical drama in a comedy style. Our main theme for this event - 'I have helped..." so since our class have gone to Jamiyah Nursing Home, donated some amount of money as well as entertained the old folks, the children acted out as grandpa and grandma. To make it interesting the scene in this musical-comedy drama involved the old folks using computers and introduce blogging to them. This was done by one of their 'grandson' who visited them at the Home. Through music, they expressed their feelings and excitement. In fact, I wanted to promote Junior Network CDC to the public through website so that they are aware of our presence.
Here are some captions which I have taken during their practice in school. DVD is sold at $15 each so grab them while stock last!
A memo...
It was a fruitful experience during our visit to Jamiyah Nursing Home near West Coast. We accumulated about $110 to be donated to the Home. Donations mainly from children of JNC and parents there. We created a card as a token of appreciation to the old folks. Many of us were surprised to see that there were non-malays too! Hhm...It's multi-racial nursing home...isnt it? We encountered a few touching stories the ‘Grandpas’ and ‘Grandmas’ there. ‘Grandpa’ and ‘Grandma’ are in poor health and most of them are on wheelchairs. When we arrived, we saw ‘Grandpa Ahmad’ crying sadly looking at us. He must have missed his family and children. Also, there was another ‘Grandpa’ who claimed that he was a Malay Language teacher when he was much younger and healthier then. It was a pity to see a few of their legs amputated due to diabetes and other sickness. During our visit, we performed songs in English, Mandarin and Tamil. Also, we also joined them in their morning exercise. Trendy music was played to accompany us in this session. We also did passing ball with them! Later,
we interviewed a few of them and sad to hear their stories...
Our project...
Children made their own special card as a token of appreciation to Jamiyah Nursing Home. This project was carried out successfully with the teamwork shown by the children. They were able to work cooperatively and less supervision was given as they were independent learners. This was child-directed activity and as a facilitator, I'll provide the best for the children and even joined to make the card too!
Exercising
Besides doing performance by singing medley songs in 3 languages - mandarin, tamil, english, we joined to do exercises with them too. It was fun as there was funky music accompany us all...
Camp Olympia was fun!
It was such as fruitful event that day. We became athletes’ .There we drama skits, role-plays and sports games such as javelin, target throwing and overhead throwing, ladder running, squat jumps and cross hopping.
Firstly, we watched drama skits about the history of Olympic Games back in Greek. Do you that back in history, only men were allowed to participate in the olympic games? Do you know that these athletes were naked? Shhsshh...
Then, we played some of the above-mentioned games (definitely in our clothings) together with our friends from PPIS. We had our lunch after that. After eating, we rested for a while and later designed our chitons. We participated in team-building games before the ‘official opening of the mini Olympic’ with the Torch lighting ceremony.
Finally, we gathered together fro the medal presentation where each of us received our Olympic medals. Overall experience was staged in an atmosphere of spontaneity and fun!
Citius! Altius! Portius! ..….Citius! Altius! Portius!
Jurong Bird Park - Excursion
Junior Edison as well as Junior Newton (Nur) went to Jurong Bird Park on 27 August 2008. The objective of chosing this place was because I would like to educate them about being responsible towards animals. Not only to old folks but to birds(animals) too, we must show our kindness and care for them as they are living things. (Allah's creation)
First visit was about the types of parrots such as macaw, scarlet and cockatoo. The programme officer brief through the different species to the children and educate them about caring for parrots. She also showed us parrot's eggs which were not fertilised and used for experiment purposes. She allowed the children to use their sense of touch and feel the different texture of the feathers. Do you know how to identify a female cockatoo? Well, we were told that there is a blue marking around the eyes of the female cockatoo. So, if you see that, it means the cockatoo is a female! Also, the scarlet parrots, they came in 'partners'. Meaning, the male's feathers are green and the female are red. Hmmm...
Apart from this, we witnessed the bird's show and children were so excited looking at the parrots, the intelligent creatures. The parrots used their beaks to collect the balls and inserted them in the cans provided, they flew into the hula hoop, and one named Amigo could sing and talk! To add more, there were also performances by the pelicans and vultures too! It was entertaining that the children wanted to watch more bird's show! "Teacher Liza, got anymore show or not?" asked Nazurah. "Teacher Liza can watch some more?"asked Farah. Due to time constraint, we could not watch more.
Later, we ate our food before proceeding to the Penguin's Enclosure. "Wahh, so dark. Look! The penguin head is at the back of the body." exclaimed Siti.
